The Treatment Centre is managed by a Clinical and Community Psychologist , Dr NM Ndlovu, BA, BA Hons, MA (Clin Psych) and Phd (Community Psych) who has practiced since 1994. He has worked with addiction clients as an affiliate of South African Responsible Gambling Foundation SARGF since 2010. The following observation motivated him to form a psychological multi-package services:
.1. Most of the psychological clients also present with substance abuse or dependence disorder.
.2. Most people treated for substance abuse also present with depression.
.3. Women with both psychological problems and substance abuse have histories of domestic violence, sexual abuse, and some are living in abusive environments.
.4. Substance abusers who receive psychological intervention as well, improve a lot in occupational and family functioning.
.5. Some diseases like HIV/Aids and strains of hepatitis, etc. are transmitted by substance abuse directly or indirectly.
The treatment service started as a Newcastle Psychological Services in 1994.
To be more holistic an idea of extending the service came after a long time the Newcastle Psychological Services were treating gambling addiction (since 2010) as an affiliate of the South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF). This organization with its internationally recognized support and training led to confidence about transferring acquired skills to drug and alcohol addiction treatment.
Our venues are 22 Jordan Street for treatment, 93 Peacock Street for accommodation; as well as Inkwelo rehab as a detox facility.
The Centre offers a short term and a long term treatment program. The core treatment approach is the world-wide accredited 12 step treatment model with intense psycho-education.
